Prince Tyrion, Defender of the High Elves

I should have posted my Tyrion miniature a long time ago. I painted it a long time ago. I finished it roughly in the summer of 1998. I took great care to clean the miniature, and I even painted it with an empty brush, just to get used to the curves and shapes of the miniature. I also followed the model of Mike McVey from Games Workshop. See this link for an interview with McVey: Realm of Chaos 80s: Citadel Colour: An Interview with Mike McVey.

High Elf Prince Tyrion - Up View

One of the toughest parts of painting this miniature, was to paint the dragon visible on the left side of the miniature (Tyrion's left!) I practised painting the dragon on other surfaces until I was comfortable enough to paint it well.

High Elf Prince Tyrion - Front View

Other than the Dragon, it was the hearts and the face, of course, that were difficult to get right.

Prince Tyrion - 3/4 side view

I am quite proud of the result and I will also try to replicated the color patterns on the 6th edition of the model. But always, this one will remain close to my heart.

Bought New Dragon Princes of Caledor - Ulthuan.net

Caledor Dragontamer, 1st

Recently, I have signed up and started posting on Ulthuan.net. I feel that it is a home for the High Elf collector in me to find a community of people who will appreciate the miniatures I have collected and built.

Also, just a week ago or so, I purchased 5 Dragon Princes of Caledor from the 4/5th edition. The "old models". But they are still beautiful to my eyes. Painting them again will feel familiar and fun. I intend to paint them in the familiar red and green pattern. I will upload images of the models when I can.

Along with those 5 new, plus the models that I use in the DPC unit but which don't really belong there (Imrik & Tyrion), I will have a unit of about 25. Along with high and impressive banner this unit will be a sight to behold!

Ellyrion Reavers - 4th ed. Warhammer

I am proud to present my newest creation, a full unit of the Ellyrion Reavers. Those miniatures are to be a part of my High Elf army. I finished painting those approximately in April 2019.

This model above is a musician, which is part of the command section of the unit. With it's horn, it can coordinate various troops movement for it's own unit.

I wanted them to feel as a part of my army and as such, they had to fit with the newest models for the Ellyrion Reavers and I have many of those (15 I think). So what I did was to customise the models to place their spears in their back when they wield a bow and vice-versa.

As for the colours, in order to differentiate them from other units, and also to represent their fleeting, fast nature, they are in purple, between the blue and the red of many other units, yet still have much white. Grey is also used on the miniatures. The horses were painted freely to have a natural look based on their diversity.

Overall, I spent about 100h working those as I don't work fast.

Notice that small details are still missing, such as the banner, some blue lines on some spears, small corrections and their shields, which are completely missing as of now.

Customizing your Army - Green Stuff

I have many chariots for my High Elves and at some point, the rules allowed you to have combination of models on the chariot. Those combinations were such as mage and archer, archer and spearmen, mage alone, etc.

I wanted to get as much flexibility in my army to cover everything and as such I decided to expand (physically) the size of some chariots to give them more space. That way I could fit more models (2 at least) in the chariot.

The following image shows you how you get the chariot to hold in place (with glue)

Here is and image of an unfinished chariot and (to the right) a finished "expanded" chariot.

Modelling with Green Stuff

This model was packaged with the Heroquest boxed game circa 1994. Heroquest miniatures are very similar to Warhammer miniatures. Citadel miniatures was the company involved in those models, hence the similarities. It was originally on a base, all moulded from the same red plastic. Unfortunately, the legs broke off.

Here you can see how I drilled the inside of the legs to insert a section of paper clip in the openings. Finally, green stuff was used to add meat around those legs:

Priming miniatures

For years, I have used this technique and there's no big secret here. I prime my miniatures white and for that I use a matte spray paint, fast dry, which acts as primer and as paint.

Miniatures are primed to be primed - Visible here are some of Heroquest Advanced Paintset from the 90s...

I position all the miniatures I want to prime inside of a box and I do that either outside during the summer or in the garage during the winter.

Also, if you are doing that in a living space (not recommended but sometimes you have no choice), then try to block the opening of the box with something like a plastic bag. So give a quick burst and then close the bag. That way you can keep all the sprayed paint inside the box. But this is not the best way to have beautiful results. Because the overall dust it creates can settle back on top of the miniatures and give a rough texture. The best is of course to do this in a well ventilated area where you can freely spray all miniatures thoroughly about 2 times.

Scenery

Some of the scenery that I've created over the years:

Scenery created by the author: hills, trees, rocks
Scenery for Wargaming - Trees, rock formations, hills, tower,... an F4 Phantom ?

This page shows some of the scenery that I have built. You can see a large hill, which is nice for Warhammer Fantasy or Warhammer 40k. Also I have built a pile of sandbags, which again fits in both universes. You can also see a cardboard tower on the left. Many trees had their bases covered in grass flock. As for the rock formations, those were some of the most fun to do. I just had fun cutting pieces of styrofoam and then I just glued them together. The end result is satisfying and again, fits both a medieval and a futuristic environment.

Thanks for your time!

Drilling Miniatures

Eltharion and Stormwing - Drilled and ready

Recently, I finalised an idea that I had in mind for many years. I wanted to drill my Eltharion on Stormwing miniature and insert a metal piece between the High Elf and the Griffon so that it held better.

More recently, I broke it by inadvertence. So that gave me the perfect opportunity to drill the model. I used the smallest bit that I have for my drill. I drilled about 1.5 mm inside of the miniature and 1.5 inside the griffon. Then I took a paperclip and cut it to roughly 3 mm. I verified that it fit well and cut a tiny bit more if necessary.

Finally, I made some epoxy glue, which I prefer for metal on metal. I dipped the 3 mm paperclip piece in the glue and then placed the glue-covered part in the griffon. Then I carefully applied some glue under Eltharion and also on the part of the paperclip that stuck out of the griffon and then joined both pieces together.

Heavy Gear - Elite Southern Militia Squad

Here are some DP9 miniatures that I bought around 1998. It was an absolute joy to assemble them and paint them and I did some nice customisation on them.

Heavy Gear Southern Militia Squad

I have purchased those miniatures around 1999. They are bigger than the newer ones. I have customized most of them. I painted them in desert camo and added some dents and scratches to their armours.

Looking at them now I feel like I should redo/finish some of them. Eventually...

Important to be noted here: I had created a banner or a standard, which was attached to the back of the first model in the center. I lost the banner. I need to recreate the banner. To do that, I will need to retrieve some data from the PC game Heavy Gear. In there I should be able to see the banner I had used as inspiration. It's maybe "Black Legion" or something similar. Anyway, I will be happy to post more of those once I have reinstalled the banner and/or repainted them.

Heavy Gear Southern Milita - King Cobra

I'm pretty sure I used spare decals for warplanes to make the 4 little yellow decals on the King Cobra model. I also added a gun. Obviously, the two missiles on the should rack of the model standing behind King Cobra is also a customization. Again old warplanes spare parts. Some the weapons added to the units come from either GI-Joe, Transformers or Warhammer 40K.

On the model above, I added a chainsaw from a WH40K sergent under the gatling machinegun. I also think that the cannon he holds in his left hand normally is mounted on his back. But that gear is elite so he carries heavy weapons wherever he pleases.

The models could use some detailing because many mistakes are visible on the pictures. Spots were left white, color differences, details not picked out, errors, the "eyes" should also be redone.

Introduction

The Dragon Pharaoh - MMWOX

Greetings and welcome to Dragon Pharaoh's blog!

In this blog I intend to post about the creating and modelling my High Elf army as well as include some discussions about video games.

I have been accumulating High Elves miniatures for the Warhammer Fantasy Battles tabletop game published by Games Workshop since about 1993. I still recall the day when I purchased my first models for my army: a repeater bolt thrower and a blister of 2 metal elf archers. Since then my army has grown tremendously and there is still much work to be done to build the army, convert some units and paint them all.

During the summer of 2003, I started coding in C++ and my goal was to program a Warhammer simulation. It was to be a game but as close to the real thing as possible in terms of rules. I wanted to have all the rules and all the units and to be able to play a full game against the computer, with a fully customised army. I accomplished much but felt short of accomplishing my goal. Already 12 years have elapsed and I have barely worked on anything since 2009. I still intend to continue but I do not have a specific time frame in mind. I will also discuss and showcase some more work on different projects and maybe get some people interested and start a crowd funding venture...

The Dragon Pharaoh is from the excellent Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen and also from its sequel, Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen. Both games combined gives you the World of Xeen. The Dragon Pharaoh needs your help to free the land from the evil Alamar and his lackey, Lord Xeen.

Also on this Blog are some of the assets for that Warhammer project and probably some more development ideas for other projects.

Happy reading!
